Macadamia’s flowering and harvest season
Flowering
Flowering typically occurs in late winter/early spring. September to mid-October for the Southern Hemisphere and mid-February to mid-April for the Northern Hemispere.
Nut formation
Green macadamia nuts typically start forming in early summer, and by early autumn, clusters of green nuts appear. Each timing varies per variety, location and climatic conditions.
Nut maturity
Macadamia nuts reach maturity when oil accumulation is completed. Usually 5 - 6 months after the nuts set. Our nuts grow in a hard, woody shell protected by a green-brown fibrous husk.
Shell hardening
Macadamia shell hardening takes place in late spring, followed by rapid oil accumulation in early summer.
Harvesting
Between autumn and winter, mature nuts fall to the ground. As flowering occurs over several months, macadamia nuts mature & drop to the ground over an extended period of time and are harvested regularly.
Processing
Our macadamias processing season generally runs from the beginning of April until November/December.
Shipping
The first full container load is normally packed up and ready for shipment from June/July. This is style dependant though and sometimes it takes a little bit longer than that, especially the smaller pieces.
Due to long-term maturity, it is possible for flowering and harvesting to overlap.
